Abstract

The richness of chelonians and the population structure of Rhinoclemmys melanosterna in Managrú, municipality of Cantón de San Pablo, Chocó, Colombia, were determined, 20 samplings were carried out in different bodies of water, using traps for turtles and trawls with nets. A sampling effort of 440 hours/trap was used, and by means of drags it was 80 hours/man. 112 captures were made: 73 by means of traps and 39 by means of trawl sweeps. The chelonian community consisted of three families, three genera and four species. Of the recorded species Kinosternon leucostomum, with 51 individuals was the most abundant. Regarding the structure of the R. melanosterna population, it was obtained that the males were dominant, with 70% which allowed significant statistical differences to exist (=0.00405), showing a 2:1 ratio. Regarding sexual dimorphism, a significant difference (P>0.05) was not evidenced in all body measurements between males and females of R. melanosterna. The females were larger than the males in all body measurements, only in the length of the tail did the males have a significantly greater length than the females.
