Recovery of ancestral hunting and fishing practices in black and indigenous communities in the Atrato and Baudó basins, Chocó

The hunting and fishing activities have served as support to countless rural, black and indigenous communities in the Chocó region. However, indiscriminate practices for the collection of fishing and hunting resources in natural forests may be generating a loss of resources and ancestral practices. The objective of this work was to design in a participative way with the communities’ strategies that lead to the recovery of these ancestral practices of hunting and fishing, which lead to the improvement of the quality of life of the fishermen and hunters of the ethnic communities. It was observed that in order to intervene communities the ecosystemic approach must be used since it identifies the relationship between sociocultural processes and natural processes, recognizes the human being and the social and cultural systems as intrinsic components of the ecosystems, and integrates the social, cultural and economic aspects in the management of natural resources.
